THIS VOYAGE: Australia (1 Sept 2016)

An icon of new world wine style, Australia ranks sixth in global wine production and has a stellar reputation for producing good quality, affordable, fruit-driven wines. Leading the pack is Shiraz and Chardonnay, which thrive in the country's relatively warm and dry climate.

Testimony to the country's potential in churning out top quality wines is Domaine Chandon, the only Australian sparkling specialists with genuine French heritage. It all started in the 1980's when renowned Champagne producer Moet & Chandon took over an old dairy farm in Yarra Valley, instantly recognizing that its cool climate and great soil conditions provided the ideal setting for producing superlative sparkling wines. Today, the winery has won numerous awards, the latest being the Best Large Cellar Door in Yarra Valley.

Then sail on around to the South of Australia, and upstream along the Onkaparinga River, arriving at McLaren Vale. We are here to visit our friends at Pertaringa Winery, who recently co-hosted a wine pairing dinner on board the Riverboat with us! Nestled in the foothills of the region, Pertaringa (which means 'belonging to the hills' in local Kaurna language) benefits from enriched soils thanks to the mountains, and cool climate thanks to sea breezes from St Vincent's Gulf - conditions that allow for the production of high quality wine grapes, made into some of the region's finest wines.

Named Winestate Magazine's Australian Winery of the Year in 2012 and 2014, and rated 5 stars by prominent writer James Halliday, Pertaringa is indeed at the forefront of Australia's wine scene and continues to live up to its reputation of producing noteworthy wines that put Australia on the world wine map.

Of course, there's much more to Australian wines than these, and if we had more time we would love to take you to explore other notable regions like the historic Hunter Valley in NSW, the far-far-away Margaret River in Western Australia, or the picturesque Tasmania! Do look out for future voyages, or contact our in-house wine specialist Daryl Saw at daryl@riverboat.com.sg to arrange a private tasting session, where we can 'sail' you to anywhere in the world without leaving Marina South Pier! Cheers and bon voyage!
